JoyceDeWitt first appeared on stage at the age of 13 years old. When she was 13 years old, DeWitt began to perform on stage. She received an undergraduate degree from Ball State University. In the summer of her stock production, she was convinced by the director to apply to UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was granted the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt has claimed that she didn't meet actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She was employed as a secretary during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is most well-known for her performance as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. Janet was also featured in the episode of The Ropers in the year 1979. DeWitt was the only actor to appear in the series' 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for a number of years. Acting was her first return to the stage in June of 1991 when she appeared in a Noises Off production in Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she appeared in the show Spring Fling which was a 1995 TV comedy. A character based upon her voice, voiced by a different actress, was in the 1997 episode of Pinky and the Brain. She appeared on the episode Cybill, and had an appearance in the penultimate episode of Living Single. Six of her 2000s TV works include Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as along with Call of the Wild.
